In
early August about one hundred breeders and friends of straight
Egyptian horses went to Northern Germany to see the horses of two
international renown studfarms. They were invited by Cornelia Tauschke
(El Thayeba Stud) and Dr. Nagel (Katharinenhof). They all came to see
the first German foals of Ashhal Al Rayyan after his successful stay
at the Katharinenhof last year.
At
the moment everybody is talking about the weather, so do I. Especially,
after one has been looking forward to an event for months, only to
fear that it will literally drown in the storm called ”summer
2002”. It’s very seldom a whole foal crop of a stallion is to be
seen and not often two of the most famous Egyptian studfarms of Europe
present their horses to the public. Peter was impressed - as the show
began, the rain stopped and even the sun began to shine! Klaus Beste (the
secretary of the German Arabian Horse Society) presented both events
in just the competent and entertaining way he is so well-known for.
El
Thayeba stud did undergo a change within the last decade.
Originally, the mares Morawa (Nizam x Momtaza) and Mona II (Mahomed x
Mahiba) and her daughter El Thay Maheera (by Nizam) were known as the
foundation mares. Today these families are reduced in favour of the
Dahman Shahwan line of Kamla II (Ansata Halim Shah x Mona III) and El
Thay Bint Mofeedah (by El Thay Ibn Halim Shah). The
Kuhaylan Rodan line of Morawa was represented by El Thay Mansoura
(Machmut x Morawa) and her enchanting daughter El Thay Mahfouza (by El
Thay Ibn Halim Shah).
The mares El Thay Matalla (by El Thay Mashour) and El Thay Magidaa (by El Thay Mameluk) were worthy representatives of their dam, El Thay Maheera. The latter resembles her famous ancestor Moniet El Nefous a lot.
Then
Kamla II and her get entered the ring and the spectators got an idea
of Cornelia Tauschke’s philosophy about inbreeding and line breeding
as the majority of these horses were closely related to each other.
Kamla’s oldest
daughter is El Thay Bint Kamla by El Thay Mansour
(Ansata Halim Shah x El Thay Maheera), an accomplished
broomatron in her own right. She was followed by some of her daughters.
The second daughte rof Kamla II who showed up was El Thay Rosetta by
El Thay Ibn Halim Shah, whose dam in turn is a half-sister to Kamla
II.
Cornelia
Tauschke bred Kamla II to her grandson, El Thay Mashour (Madkour I x
El Thay Bint Kamla) and was rewarded with four beautiful foals. The
three year old filly El Thay Kamla (El Thay Mashour x Kamla II) is a
masterpiece and had a most successful show season this year. She won
National Junior Champion Filly of Germany and was awarded the Junior
Champion title of the Egyptian Event Europe among others. Her younger
sister, El Thay Kadiya is in no way inferior to her and the third
sister was sold to Omar Sakr of Egypt. This year, Kamla II gave birth
to a little ”pasha”, who is full of himself and a real show-off.
The second line of the Dahman Shahwan strain at El Thayeba is represented through El Thay Bint Mofeedah (El Thay Ibn Halim Shah x Mofeedah). Her dam Mofeedah (Hadban Enzahi x Malikah by Ghazal) traces back to Moheba, half-sister to Ansata Ibn Halima. El Thay Bint Mofeedah herself was sold to Kuwait, yet her typey daughter El Thay Mashoura still graces the farm.
El
Thayeba stud, however, is not only well-known for its broodmares of
exceptional quality, but also for its outstanding stallions. Since its
foundation, 25 El Thayeba stallions were licensed, awarded a prize at
the stallion licensing or got a gold or silver medal at the annual
German stallion show. No other German studfarm can rival this record!
The black Ansata Exemplar (Asjah Ibn Faleh x Ansata Jumana) fits well into that picture and won a gold medal at the stallion show. Born at the famous Ansata Arabian Stud, the eight year old stallion was imported in 1996. A horse with good size and frame and extremely nice movements, he is passing on both qualities to his offspring. El
Thay Khemal Pasha (El Thay Mansour x Kamla II) replaced his sire who
now resides in Jordan. From his paternal grandam El Thay Maheera he
inherited his dry and long face with marvellous big eyes. Of course,
in his youth he was Junior Champion Colt at the Stallion Show. Extremely
interesting is the comparison between the two stallions El Thay
Mashour (x El Thay Bint Kamla) and El Thay Malikh (x El Thay Bint
Mofeedah). Both are sons of the late, great Madkour I and both shone
as Champion Stallions at the Stallion Show in two consecutive years.
El
Thay Mashour bewitched the audience with charm and attitude, while El
Thay Malikh looks like a carbon copy of his sire. The resemblance to
Madkour I in body and type is striking. Finally,
Ansata Selman (Ansata Hejazi x G Shafaria) was shown. He is on lease
from Al Rayyan Stud of Qatar. This three-year old grey colt traces
back to Ghazal’s full-sister Ansata Bint Bukra. He will stay for two
years in Germany and who did not see him this weekend, will see him at
the All Nations Cup or at the Stallion Show. After
the audience had enjoyed the Arabians of El Thayeba it was time to
move on to the Katharinenhof where the next fascinating group of
horses was waiting. First the foals of Ashhal Al Rayyan (Safir x Ansata Majesta) were shown.
His breeder Sheikh Abdulaziz had just arrived from Qatar to see the
foals.
Last
year Ashhal Al Rayyan was bred to a limited number of German mares.
Today all could see the greater part of his foals.
16 foals owned by eleven different breeders came in front of the audience. Most of them still were at the side of their dams and so the interested breeders could see the influence of Ashhal Al Rayyan.
The first filly presented was the oldest Ashhal get: A daughter of Mesoudah M (Imperial Madheen’s full-sister), bred by Horst Preuss. This yearling filly is an extremely nice little lady. The last and final one was the youngest foal, a really charming three year-old filly out of Malysha, bred by Susanne Schreibvogel.
In
between, fourteen foals were shown, worth the longest trip. In spite
of the different dams, all of the foals were compact and harmonious,
long-legged and elegant. They were upright and displayed excellent
tail carriage. Many a breeder might have regret that he had not
received a breeding to Ashhal Al Rayyan. To thank those who had the confidence to breed their mares to his
stallion, Sheikh Abdulaziz presented everyone with a precious Arabian
halter.
Afterwards the sires and dams of the Katharinenhof came into view. These
horses are the result of 35 years planned breeding, mainly based on
the Obeyan mare Hanan (Alaa el Din x Mona/Inshass).
He was followed by his charming and compact grandson, Ibn Nejdy (Nejdy by Salaa El Dine x Ghazala by Ghazal out of Hanan) and his great grandson Hafid Jamil (Ibn Nejdy x Helala), an extremely typey stallion even if not without faults. But Dr. Nagel matched him with the right mares and was rewarded with outstanding progeny. Best example is Hafid Jamil’s promising young son Jamaal El Dine (out of Ansata KEN Ranya by Salaa El Dine). Hafid Jamil is co-owned with Mr. Hassanain Al Nakeeb who operates a studfarm in Great Britain. The
two full-brothers Bolbol and Oteyba (Salaa El Dine x Sanana by Nahaman
x Myrna by The Egyptian Prince) are representing the Saklawi Gidran
strain. They are not as ethereal as the aforementioned stallions but
posses a lot of style and motion.
Then
all the broodmares were presented – seventeen of the most noble and
elegant mares came into the limelight. They derive from different
lines - Hanan (Obeyan), Mahiba (Saklawi Gidran), Ansata Bint Bukra (Dahman
Shahwan) and Lotfeia (Hadban Enzahi) but still were very uniform in
body and type.
The
big question was: Will Dr. Nagel and Cornelia Tauschke organise
another presentation like these in the next year? Fingers crossed!
Perhaps then we will see the foals of Ansata Selman... Susanne
