Dr. Nagel, year of 1930, was introduced to Arabian horses through professional colleagues.
In 1967, he began to build his breeding programme with horses from the Egyptian Agricultural Organization Stud Farm, El Zahraa. Today, his Katharinenhof is one of the world’s leading stud farms for straight Egyptian horses. The U.S. National Top Ten stallion Jamil (Jamilll), the World Champion stallion Sherif Pasha, the Reserve National Champion of Sweden, Shahin, or the Reserve National Champion Mare of Qatar, Aisha, were born here. Dr. Nagel has been president of the German Arab Horse Society for 17 years. What follows is a summary of his most important statements.

What the studfarm means to him

My studfarm is a phantastic passtime... Breeding offers an intersting counterbalance for people who "live in the fast lane". One is never finished. There is always something new to be tried.

On the relationship to his horses

I was closest to the ones I bought first - my great love. With a horse that has been with a person for 24 years the relationship simply must be very close. Hanan (Alaa El Din x Mona, Inshass) for instance, meant a great deal to me. She had the air of a queen and she acted and reacted that way wherever she went. After her eleventh foal was born, I stopped breeding her. Of course, she could have produced more foals, but I was more interested in keeping and protecting her for her own sake. The decision turned out to be a good one.

On inbreeding

In general, horses are not so sensitive to inbreeding as other animals. One should practice inbreeding in any case only in order to strengthen good qualities, since problems can always arise. Horses may be smaller or their necks shorter. Loss of pigmentation can occur. In my opinion linebreeding an inbreeding only can be done with two mares without fear of complications - and these are Estopa (Om El Arab) and Hanan.

Breeding is primarily a matter of testing. No one can predict for certain, that a given combination will turn out good or another bad. What does ist say in the Old Testament? "You shall judge them by their fruits!" One should always look at the offspring and not judge on the basis of show records alone...

I think that inbreeding is fine, so long as it used with care and so long one is able to recognize the point at which it has gone too far.

On breeding goals

I want dry, fine and elegant Arabians. I am trying to preserve the dryness by means of selection.

On pedigree

It’s time to put an end to these annoying pedigree stories. What happened centuries ago has no relevance for breeding today. We ought to liberate ourselves of all that. At some point it’s simply necessary to close a studbook and go about creating a pure population from then on.

On the state of Arabian breeding in Germany

There are fortunately a number of people involved in breeding in this country, not just with trading and purchasing horses. This may change in view of the huge surplus on the US market...  Many German breeders will purchase their future champion in America.

On show excesses

It was for this reason that the ECAHO (European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations) - a child of my creation - was founded at the WAHO Congress at Calgary. It is a good forum for continued work. Thanks to ECAHO, we do not find in Europe the kind of exesses prevalent in the USA. The disciplinary committees, in fact, were created as a result of ECAHO.

There are extremes in which the term "natural" comes to mean an untrained horse. Many people cannot afford a trainer - and doing the training oneself demands a great deal of effort. As a result, horses are shown rather untrained. That should not be allowed, of course. We ought to find a good compromise between the two extremes.

On the influence of American horses on his breeding programme

I have bought Egyptians from the US in order to get qualities that weren’t present in my horses. A better topline and croup, for example. That worked well with Ansata Halim Shah (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Rosetta). I purchased Mohafez (Ibn Moniet El Nefous x Ahroufa) for similar reasons. I was aware of the pigmentation problem. There was no coloured Egyptian stallion in Germany at that time. There were the Nazeer sons Ghazal, Hadban Enzahi and Kaisoon, of course, but all three had pigmentation problems.

On Jamil (Jamilll) and Salaa El Din

Jamil was the most flawless of Hanan’s foals, in my opinion - as an individual. But Salaa El Din (by Ansata Halim Shah), Hanan’s last foal, was to be her most significant offspring. Even before he reached the age of ten, his sons and daughters were found all over the world, among them show winners, excellent sires and even successfull racehorses. If I compare the two horses as individuals, Jamil was the better. Judith Forbis owns a number of beautiful daughters of Jamil, but as they say, never quite their father. I was more fortunate in that I do have such daughters. Afifa (Jamil x Ghazalah by Ghazal x Hanan) is probably the daughter most similar to her father.

His philosophy

Demonstrate self-confidence; go your own way. Of course, that requires experience, not so much with horses as with people... Those who let themselves be led by fashion and fads will never create a solid concept.
