When I brought my mare El Thay Bint Kamla (El Thay Mansour x Kamla II by Ansata Halim Shah) to Madkour I in 1993, it was already difficult to get a mare in foal to this old gentleman. I knew that others had tried and were unsuccessfully but nevertheless I went for it. I wanted to have a colt by him – and fortunately my wish was granted!
When El Thay Mashour arrived in 1994 I instantly knew he was a future breeding prospect.
At this time his namesake and paternal half brother, Mashour, was highly successful at shows and some breeders raised their eyebrows because I gave an unimportant young foal the same name. But deep in my heart I knew that one day this foal would grow into a very important stallion. Time proved my feeling was right…
I gave Mashour plenty of time to mature. No show training, no pressure, he was just a horse and played with the other colts in the pasture. When he was two-and-a-half years old, I bred him to his very first mare. The resulting foal was El Thay Mashoura (x El Thay Bint Mofeedah), who resembled her sire very much and was everything I had hoped for. Later I sold her to Mohssen Al Gabry of Egypt, who got some exceptionally beautiful fillies out of her. I kept her daughter El Thay Malikah (by Ansata Selman) who will shortly gave birth to the first Mashour great-grandchild at my studfarm.
At the age of three El Thay Mashour was put into show training. He won Reserve Champion at a small show in Germany, his first outing. At the Asil Cup International he was "only" Reserve Champion of his class but the star in the collecting ring. By now he was full of himself and proud as a peacock but I realized he didn’t feel confident in the showring at all. Mashour didn’t like it to be away from the people he knew, therefore I decided to take him home again. I prepared him for the annual German Stallion Show and showed him there by myself. He not only was named Junior Champion Colt but Supreme Champion of the whole show.
Next I put him under saddle and he had to prove that he was a suitable riding horse.
As a senior he was shown to 2003 German National Champion Stallion and Reserve Senior Champion Stallion at the 2003 Asil Cup International at Marbach.
Over the years I bred Mashour to the most important mares of the El Thayeba Stud and a few breeders sent him their mares as well. I never promoted him because I feel that it is not important to own popular stallions breeding as many outside mares as possible. Most important to me is that my stallions fit into my programme and complement the mares I own.
The nick between Mashour and his maternal granddam Kamla II (Ansata Halim Shah x Mona III) was extremely successful. At the beginning I wasn’t quite sure about this combination due to the heavy linebreeding to Ansata Halim Shah and Moheba II. Kamla was already linebred to Moheba II and now breeding her to her own grandson? However, the first foal, El Thay Kamla, was a direct hit. A feminine version of her sire, El Thay Kamla is a dream horse, a champion mare, a wonderful broodmare and a favourite among the many visitors from the Middle East, who constantly try to buy her. Her daughter El Thay Kareema (by Ansata Selman) is of the same quality like her.
I repeated this breeding five times in a row and I got three more fillies and two colts. All full siblings are similar in type and quality. Besides El Thay Kamla I incorporated her sister El Thay Khadija into my broodmare band. El Thay Kalila is at home at the famous studfarm of Omar Sakr in Egypt and El Thay Kamila is in the ownership of Al Waab Stud in Qatar. One colt is in Egypt now and the other, El Thay Kalil, will stay in Germany.
At the moment I have three Mashour daughters at my stud, three granddaughters and one very promising colt out of a Mashour daughter. Mashour's influence at El Thayeba is keen.
In 2002 Mashour was Senior Champion Stallion and Supreme Champion of the Egyptian Event Europe against toughest competition (like the eventual World Champion Stallion, Al Lahab) and the first inquiry from Qatar came to buy him – but at this time I couldn’t part with him. I needed him for my breeding programme.
In 2003 I had the opportunity to lease the colt Ansata Selman from Al Rayyan Stud in Qatar for two seasons. First I bred him to four of my older mares and in the next year he bred my Mashour daughters. Then he went back home to Qatar.
When the first Selman foals out of my Mashour daughters were born I was spellbound and I tried to lease him again as soon as possible – but without success. Sheikh Abdul Aziz needed him in Qatar. I was devastated.
Then he made me an offer I couldn’t resist: I was allowed to get Ansata Selman again but he wanted El Thay Mashour in return. First I thought it was a leasing-agreement again but then I realized that Sheikh Abdul Aziz wanted to have Mashour in his possession. It was a painful decision to let him got but I had two good reasons: I wanted to have Ansata Selman for my Mashour daughters and the opportunities for Mashour in Qatar were far better than in Germany. Mashour needed mares with Bukra and Halima blood to throw his distinct type to his foals and at Al Rayyan were the right mares for him. Furthermore Sheikh Abdul Aziz had promised me that Mashour would be sent back to me once he would have had fullfilled his duties as a sire to live his retirement years on German soil. I signed the contract, accompanied Mashour and two additional mares to Qatar and a week later me and Ansata Selman flew back to Germany.
In Qatar Mashour was named 2005 Reserve National Champion Stallion and Champion Stallion of his class at the International Show in 2006. However, he never was used to his full potential as a sire and bred just a handful of mares over the last three years.
Last February I once again had the opportunity to meet Mohammed Al Marzouk from Kuwait, who admired Mashour since he had seen him in Germany. Over the course of our conversation we came to the conclusion that Mashour could give the breeding programmes of Kuwait a new impulse. Especially the combination of Mashour with daughters of the late Adnan (Salaa El Dine by Ansata Halim Shah x Ghazalah) and Ansata Hejazi (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Sudarra) should be more than promising. Sheikh Abdul Aziz generously agreed to let Mashour go and his departure was scheduled for the end of April.
I was all over the moon because due to the fact that I am spending several weeks a year in Kuwait I would have had the opportunity to see my beloved Mashour regularly.

Als ich El Thay Bint Kamla (El Thay Mansour x Kamla II von Ansata Halim Shah) zu Madkour I zum Decken brachte, war es schon schwierig Stuten von ihm tragend zu bekommen. Andere Züchter versuchten es ebenfalls, aber erfolglos. Aber Bint Kamla wurde tragend und ich wünschte mir ein Hengstfohlen. Der Wunsch wurde mir erfüllt. Als El Thay Mashour 1994 zur Welt kam sah man sofort: Sas wird ein Hengst mit Zuchtpotiential.
Seine Namensgebung löste einigen Unmut aus, war doch zu dieser Zeit der Hengst Mashour, ein anderer Madkour I-Sohn, durch seine Erfolge in aller Munde. Und nun sollte ein unbedeutendes Fohlen diesen Namen erhalten! Mir war aber damals schon bewusst, dass mein Mashour nicht unbedeutend bleiben würde...
Er durfte sich in aller Ruhe entwickeln, wuchs auf mit anderen Junghengsten und deckte zweieinhalbjährig seine erste Stute. Das Fohlen, das ihm Jahr darauf zur Welt kam, war El Thay Mashoura, die ihrem Vater sehr ähnlich war und vollkommen meinen Erwartungen entsprach. Sie wurde später nach Ägypten abgegeben und liefert ihrem Besitzer, Mohssen Al Gabry, hervorragende Stutfohlen. Ihre Tochter El Thay Malikah (von Ansata Selman) verblieb im Gestüt und wird in Kürze den ersten Mashour-Urenkel für das El Thayeba-Gestüt zur Welt bringen.
Als Dreijähriger wurde Mashour auf zwei Schauen vorgestellt. Er wurde Reserve-Champion auf einer kleinen C-Schau und ging anschließend zum Asil Cup in Baden- Baden. Er wurde "nur" Zweiter in seiner Klasse, aber im Vorring erregte er großes Aufsehen – mittlerweile fühlte er sich als Hengst und zeigte das auch, aber ich merkte, dass er sich auf Schauen nicht sonderlich wohl fühlte und es ihm auch nicht gefiel von zu Hause weg zu sein. Ich holte ihn zurück und bereitete ihn selbst für die Verbandshengstschau vor, wo ich ihn auch selber vorführte. Dort wurde er nicht nur Junioren-Sieger, sondern Gesamtsieger der
Verbandshengstschau.
Danach wurde er angeritten und musste sich als Reitpferd beweisen.
Als Senior gewann er 2003 den Titel des Nationalen Champions in Neustadt/Dosse
und beim Asil Cup in Marbach wurde er im gleichen Jahr Senioren-Reserve-Champion.
In den kommenden Jahren deckte Mashour die wichtigsten Stuten im El Thayeba-Gestüt, sowie eine überschaubare Anzahl Fremdstuten. Es war nie mein Bestreben die Decklisten anzuführen, so habe ich meine Hengste nie entsprechend promoted. Für mich war immer das Wichtigste, dass sie in mein Zuchtprogramm passen.
Als besondere Passerpaarung stellte sich die Anpaarung mit Kamla II (Ansata Halim Shah x Mona III) heraus - seiner Großmutter. Am Anfang war ich etwas skeptisch, ob man diese starke Linienzuch auf Halim Shah und die Moheba-Linie wagen kann. Kamla II war ja schon auf Moheba II ingezogen und nun eine Anpaarung mit ihrem Enkel?! Das Ergebnis war jedoch ein Volltreffer: El Thay Kamla, ein Traumpferd, eine Championesse, eine spitzen Zuchtstute und begehrtes Kaufobjekt bei den Züchtern aus dem Nahen Osten. Die weibliche Ausgabe ihres Vaters! Ihre Tochter El Thay Kareema (von Ansata Selman) ist von gleicher Güte.
Noch fünfmal wurde diese Anpaarung wiederholt und es fielen insgesamt vier Stutfohlen und zwei Hengstfohlen. Diese Pferde sind sich alle sehr änlich und in der Vererbung sehr konstant. Zwei der Stuten blieben in meiner Zuchtstutenherde: El Thay Kamla und El Thay Khadija. El Thay Kalila wurde an Omar Sakr in Ägypten abgegeben und El Thay Kamila an das Al Waab-Gestüt in Qatar. Ein Hengst wurde ebenfalls nach Ägypten verkauft, während der Jüngste aus der Anpaarung, El Thay Kalil, in Deutschland bleibt.
Derzeit stehen drei Töchter von Mashour und drei Enkeltöchter sowie ein vielversprechender Nachwuchshengst aus einer Mashour-Tochter bei mir. Sein Einfluss im Gestüt ist unverkennbar.
Im Jahr 2002 kam zum ersten Mal die Anfrage aus Qatar, ob Mashour zu verkaufen sei. Es war anlässilch des Egyptian Event Europe, wo Mashour Senioren-Champion und später Gesamt-Champion der Hengste wurde. Sein Konkurrent war kein geringerer als der spätere Welt-Champion Al Lahab! Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war an einen Verkauf nicht zu denken.
Ein Jahr später ergab sich die Gelegenheit den Junghengst Ansata Selman vom Gestüt Al Rayyan in Qatar zu pachten. Im ersten Jahr deckte er vier Stuten, die älteren Damen des Gestüts. Im darauf folgendem Jahr waren dann die ersten Mashour-Töchter soweit. Sie wurden gedeckt und Selman ging zurück nach Qatar.
In der nächsten Saison wurden die ersten Selman-Fohlen aus der Anpaarung mit den Mashour-Töchtern geboren und das Ergebnis war überwältigend! Ich versuchte Selman erneut zu pachten, aber ohne Erfolg. Er wurde in Qatar gebraucht.
Im nächsten Jahr ein erneuter Versuch, diesmal mit Erfolg, aber mit der Bedingung Mashour im Austausch zu schicken. Zuerst verstand ich es als Pacht, aber Scheich Abdul Aziz wollte den Hengst in seinem Besitz haben. Die Entscheidung Mashour ganz gehen zu lassen, fiel mir schwer, aber ich wollte Selman für meine Zucht und natürlich sah ich die Chance, die Mashour in Qatar bekommen würde. Dort standen die Stuten, die zu ihm passten. Er brauchte den Blutanschluss über Bukra und Halima, um mit seinem Typ durchzukommen. Außerdem bekam ich die Zusage, dass Mashour eines Tages, wenn er alt wäre und seine Aufgabe als Deckhengst erfüllt hätte, seinen Lebensabend in seinem Heimatgestüt verbringen dürfte. Also stimmte ich zu. Mashour, zwei Stuten und ich flogen nach Qatar und eine Woche später kam ich mit Selman zurück.
Leider gab man Mashour nie wirklich eine Chance. Drei Jahre stand er in Qatar, ohne groß eingesetzt zu werden. Zweimal wurde er auf Schauen gezeigt: 2005 wurde er Nationaler Reserve-Champion und gewann bei der Internationalen Schau seine Klasse.
Ende Februar hatte ich wieder einmal die Gelegenheit, um Pedigrees, die Ägypterzucht im allgemeinen und speziel in Kuwait mit Mohammed Al Marzouk zu diskutieren. Herr Al Marzouk war schon immer ein Fan von Mashour. Gemeinsam kamen wir zu dem Entschluss, das Mashour dem kuwaitischen Zuchtprogramm neue Impulse geben könnte. Besonders die Anpaarung mit den Töchtern von Ansata Hejazi (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Sudarra) und Adnan (Salaa El Dine x Ghazalah) schien uns interessant. Scheich Abdul Aziz stimmte zu, dass Mashour auf unbestimmte Zeit nach Kuwait reisen sollte. Ende April sollte es soweit sein.
Ich war überglücklich, hätte ich doch nun die Gelegenheit gehabt ihn mehrmals im Jahr zu sehen. Leider kam es dazu nicht mehr.
