I would like to know your personal experiences or suggestions for mares that are difficult to get in foal. What procedures do you take, and what are the best approaches, in your opinions?
I'd especially love to hear success stories

, but if you have stories of mares that after every approach were never able to get in foal, share that too.
Thank You. Angela

My experionce is to put a kind gentleman stallion with your mare on the field the whole season. Best way in my eyes!

I agree with Bert. Afriend had TWO older mares that she tried all the scientific intervention methods with, for two years, and nothing worked, so she gave up and turned them out in the field with a very nice stallion. Next spring, both had healthy foals.
I believe the more natural we can keep out mares, the better, as far as breeding and foaling. I know that I personally, have had nothing but problems with anything other than natural methods as well.

Hi Angela,
Great question and I agree with Bert and Cathy. A friend of mine recently told me about a flush product called "Settle" that is supposed to help the uterine environment prepare for an embryo - I have not yet tried it, but it's something to consider.

Hand breeding (don't prefer pasture breeding) because you'll likely want to use a small dose of oxytocin to expel retained fluid.
Outside Outside Outside! Nothing makes an old mare feel good about breeding than fresh aire, LOTS of sunlight, and a smooth talking stallion/teaser.

I found this article very helpful : The title says it's about old maiden mares, but it counts for all old mares as well.
