Looking for information on the stallion Mohssen. Anyone seen him in the flesh? What are your thoughts on him?
Guest_Dennis
Funny that you were asking. Last week I talked to Oliver about him. We both saw him at the stallion licensing the first time. He was hard to judge then as he showed his age very much (he was over 20 at this time). He was extremely small. They seized him with approximately 1,48 metres but he stood at tip toes. biggrin.gif
Mr Poth imported hin from Canada or the US just before the stallion licensing and he was a bit skinny. I do not know if he stood as a mount at a riding school because when he had to run free he always circled around his handler in a calm gallop. It looks as if he was at a longe - but he wasn't of course.
He had strong short cannons, a nice neck but overall displayed not the class of his maternal half brothers like The Egyptian Prince or Ibn Zaghloul. Perhaps due to his age he looked not that impressive. On the other hand did I see The Egyptian Prince at the same age and he looked fantastic.
Mohssen sired some very lovely daughters like Bint Mohssen who went on to produce very good horses. Bint Mohssen produced the Asil Cup Reserve Champion Filly Maida Bint Mohssen who was very reminiscent of Mohssen in body.

I've seen one of Mohssen's Poth bred son, U.P. Mobaris, in France (Avigon). He was absolutly gorgeous and very close to my ideal of perfection ; grey with tons of type and presence, and also very good body and legs. I think Mohssen bred horses ar wonderful and he certainly did produce even better than himself.

I believe he was in WA State when he was exported, at least he spent a ton of time there. He sired Jassen (x Jamaal Colleen) and this stallion was used to produce dtrs that were bred to a saddlebred stallion by the name of Knolland Strike Up The Band (By Key Largo). This combo of Jassen dtrs with Strike dominated the HA/NSH ring the US for many years. We have a dtr of Jassen, her name is Jaysseen.

Thanks for all the info on him. It is all very interesting. I would love to see some pictures of his sons and/or daughters. Anyone have any they can post?

Howdy,

Mohssen was a great old horse. I'm pretty sure he was a Canadian Top Ten Stallion in a fairly big class in the early 1970's. He was owned from the time he was a foal until exportation by Ron Wright in Utah. The main reason one didn't hear more of Mohssen in Egyptian breeding circles is that Mr. Wright didn't have a lot of SE mares and most of Mohssen's US foals were part-Egyptian. I had the Mohssen son, Athar, for a while. He was a great old stallion, out of the *Morafic daughter, Motaj. I showed him at one of the Crabbet Shows in Oregon in the mid 1980's and I remember he did quite well and I think won an aged stallion class of maybe a dozen horses or better.

I think what set Mohssen 'apart' from the other *Bint Mona sons was he was the one who most resembled his dam. The Egyptian Prince was definitely a *Morafic son, Ibn Zaghoul was unique to his breeding, *Ibn Antar looked like a grey Anter and Ibn Talal took much more after the Nazeer/Zaafarana side of his pedigree.

While not as strong in the back, Mohssen did have good legs and bred on an amazingly stunning head in many cases. And this could be passed down through several generations.

Well, it is very interesting that you mentioned Mobaris, I think he's going to travel to Germany this spring. smile.gif
Please, tell us more about him. Have you seen any offspring?
Guest_Karen
Anyone have pictures of Mohssen?
Guest_Inchallah
Wow ! That's too great, Mobaris is coming to see you in Germany, guys ! You are very very lucky...
I've seen several of his foals out of SE mares or not while at his owner's and boy they were all gorgeous. He's just adding plenty of type and refinement : big eyes, cute muzzle, nice dish, well shaped neck, correct topline, dry bone, short coupling and gorgeous body. From the pictures I've seen of Mohssen, I'd say Mobaris is better even if he certainly took a lot after his father. He's really hard to fault. I wish I could post pictures of him and his babies but I don't think I've any who does really do him justice. You should go and see him, he's really one of a kind.

Gern geschehen. Das Foto ist leider klein, aber wenn man "Mobaris, Mohssen" bei google eingibt, dann kommt man auf dasselbe Foto in einem größeren Format, da erkennt man mehr.
Bin schon gespannt ihn in Natura zu sehen!
ninaGuest
Well, now that I saw him, I have to agree with Inchallah. I like him very much and for me, he's got something refreshingly "natural".
Unfortunatly, as far as I'm informed, he wont be available for other breeders and their mares.

Hi Journey

I saw Mohssen as a yearling at Gleanlochs in 1967. He was a georgeous colt.Mr Ron Wright, Uta bought him in 1968.
He produced here SE 24 daughters and 23 sons. He was imported by U Poth in 1987 and died in 1989. The Poth's always selected excellent horses and would not shy away from an aged stallions, if he is excellent. Mohssen was. We dont either, when we imported Sf Ibn Nazeer in 1973 as a 20year old from Egypt.Just to get a few foals from such oldtimers is a blessing, a treasure to behold.

I saw Mohssen (1966) at the US Nationals where he became a US Top Ten Halter champion, having numerous other halter championships.
He was an excellent mover, quite correct, especially in the leg department, and was very beautiful. He also looked like a "stallion" presented himself as such and also had a very sweet dispostion. He was not that tall, but his presence made him look like a tall horse. I felt, he got a lot from his dam.I really liked him.

Hi Hansi,

Thanks for the information on Mohssen.

Sue Patrick had great admiration for Mohssen too and described him much the same as you have and one of Redwood Lodge's first imports was a daughter of Zafriaa (Mohssen x Zi Mor by Morafic). This is also one of the reasons WH Justice was chosen for the breeding program - his dam carries the blood of Mohssen.

Best wishes,

Jenni

Dear Hansi

Glad to hear you like Mohsen. You knew his dam, Bint Mona, and of course his sire. And you knew Mohssen's brother The Egyptian Prince who also came after his dam. How would you compare Mohssen and The Egyptian Prince? What was different, what did they had in common?
HLM
Hi everybody.

I saw Mohssen for the first time as a yearling in 1967 at Gleannloch. He was georgeous in my eyes and quite correct. I saw him again in 1968 and he was also very beautiful then. He was a 1972 Canadian National Top Ten Halter Champion against very tough competition.

He was bought by Ron Wright, Utah,USA in 1968. He was a US Top Ten Halter Champion with numerous championships to his credit. Ursula Poth imported him in 1987 at age 21. The Poth have a good eye for a horse and would not have taken a chance importing a bad horse and at that age.

Also please take into account that when you transport a horse a long distance into another country, climate, etc not all will do well there. When a horse loses weight, as they all will do, and at that age, it could be very deceiving.

I still see him in my mind and must say he was an excellent colt then, good legs, shoulder, hip, neck etc. He also produced well.

Just my opinion

Dear Oliver

In my eyes Mohssen had more substance than theEgyptianPrince, who was more refined and elegant- and a Morafic son.. MOhssen was more conmpact and did enherit from his sire a more thicker neck, although good length and well set on. As you might have noticed Ansata and Gleannloch exchanged breeding, but did not keep such offspring in their own breeding program.. Of course, Morafic and Ibn Halima were two totally different horses and produced accordingly.

Just look at the sons produced by Jamilll (Jamil) (1975) out of Ansata mares. They were mostly gelded or sold. Sometimes I felt if Judi did not want any competition to Ibn Halima's sons. But may be its just my thinking.

Hi,

Mobaris is at Otto´s place since 2 years..
i saw him at the stallion Show in 2004

I really liked him!!!!

But as always, the german breeders did not use him as much as they should!!!!!
They like more to tell people how hard it is to find a stallion for there mare....etc...

Thankyou Journey for starting this thread, it has come up before on this forum but this one has brought up more information that previously.
Amirs tail female line is Royal Gemm, mohssen/hekmat so have been trying to find more information on him via the internet.
So this new information is like gold and its wonderful he was held in high esteem from well known, experienced breeders!
Hekmat I dont have any information on either and would love to know more about her and Royal Gemm.
It is interesting that I can see Mohssens influence in Amir from the photos posted.
here is the only pic I have of Royal Gemm, and the ones i have of Mohssen too.
Thanks again everyone.

Very nice to see a thread on Mohssen. We have VP Regal Heir, whose dam is Bint Sammara, by Mohssen, making him a grandson. We have been told, although we have not seen Mohssen in person ourselves, that Regal resembles him. Regal, however, is quite tall, almost 15.2 hands.
Please keep more pictures coming! Attached is a picture of Regal Heir (El Hilal x Bint Sammara).
Most Sincerely,

I have a two and a half minute video on Royal Gemm that shows her trotting and close ups of her head and body.
Video says she was 15 hands.

Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentMy own little tribute to Mohssen is deceased Moynese. She came to me at the age of 17 in foal to VP Regal Heir and gave birth to a very beautiful but small colt. She lived with me until the grand old age of 23 and it was an honour to have known and cared for her. Unfortunately she never bred again which was tragic. She was an exquiste mare very dry in appearance. Only measuring 14hh and 1/2 inch what she lacked in height she made up for in sheer quality. She was layed to rest here in Derbyshire with her stable mate Bint El Sanaa.
