Hello Sue,
I visited your website and noticed a reference to the *Marroufa line: "Whether you call this strain Kuhaylah Jellebiyah or Saklawiyah Jedraniya..."
Could you explain that to me? I have two mares of the *Marroufa damline that I dearly love and so I'm intrigued about your statement.
Thanks in advance...
Linda
Hi, Linda,
it is my understanding that Michael Bowling conducted research to show that the mare Bint Yemama (Saklawi I x Yemama) of Prince Mohammed Ali is the maternal half-sister of the famous Mesaoud, who was a Saqlawi Jedran of Ibn Sudan bought by Lady Anne Blunt from Ali Pasha Sharif. Bowling analyzed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA is passed maternally) to prove that the descendants of Bint Yemama and those of Bint Helwa, a Saklawiyah Jedraniyah closely related to Mesaoud, share the same tail female line, and are therefore Saklawi. It is also my understanding that Bowling used the same method to show that the true descendants of Jellabiet Feysul through Makbula have different mtDNA, which demonstrate that they have a different tail female line (Jellabi) than the Bint Yemama line.
I am not sure whether Bowling's research was ever repeated (usually another researcher repeats the research to provide independent verification). To muddy the waters further, many early breeders bred the Jellabi and Saklawi horeses together, to produce beautiful horses. So, this Jellabi line may in fact be Saklawi, if Bowling's research is correct. I do not support one theory over another on this strain designation. I just want to inform regarding Bowling's research on this subject. Whether Saklawi or Jellabi--this is still a beautiful line of horses.
Hope this makes some sense!
Best regards,
Sue
So, hopefully,
