I hope I'm at the right forum where someone asked about Omar El Shaker and what became of him!o)
I will break up the info I have about OMAR EL SHAKER (Shaker El Masri x Om El Arab) in a few posts.
This is about his progeny and his foal’s pedegrees. NOTE: SE/Asil = Straight Egyptian and/or Asil.

I will begin at Zahir, Baraka, Nabilah, Rosina, Mamdouha and El Moez.
They were imported into South Africa in 1945. Sadly El Moez sired no progeny in South Africa and Mamdouha had no SE/Asil foals in SA.
Zahir was the only full brother to Adham and he had 7 half siblings through his dam, which of only El Zahraa and Zahran (IOHB 125) had progeny. El Zahraa had 3 progeny and only Ghazala 1 (out of El Moez) had progeny. Of the 9, three was by Adham (Zahir's full brother) and only Zabia had brogeny, among other was Adhem (who’s son Asham Amir was imported to SA and bred to Progeny of Zahir).
Zahir had 5 progeny of which was 3 SE/Asil -- Kareem (sired before he was exported but had no progeny) and two out of Baraka (5 progeny and 3 SE/Asil, 2 by Zahir and one by Tuwaisan) - Gordonville Ziyadan and Gordonville Zahara (no progeny).

Baraka's foal by Tuwaisan (Sent from Bahrain as a gift to South Africa) was Sahiby Bint Baraka and was the only Asil horse Tuwaisan sired. She had 4 progeny of which 3 where Asil but only one, Sahiby Noura (by Ahir), had progeny. Two of the 5 descendents of her were of her own sire Ahir - Sahiby Juleemah and Sahiby Rifki. Sahiby Juleemah have quite a few Asil offspring and one of them are Sidi Egyptian Queen (by WD Majesty), who was put to Shari-Silic Akbar (by OMAR EL SHAKER).

Gordonville Ziyadan, the only SE/Asil descendant of Zahir, had 14 progeny of which
only 3 are SE/Asil - Inzam Saklabilah (out of Nabilah - the only pure Arab she bred and luckily was SE/Asil), and two out of Rosina (the only two of Rosina who was SE/Asil ) Sahiby Yakouta and Charmante Ibn Ziyadan (who had no SE/Asil progeny).

The foundation mare of the oldest stud in South Africa, the Nabilah Stud, was Inzam Saklabilah and she had 8 progeny and 6 where SE/Asil. Four of them where by the Babson stallion Anchor Hill Omar (out of Anchor Hill Bint Gamila, a Mamdouha descendent) - Nabilah Ziyada, Nabilah Asil Pacha (no progeny), Nabilah Scheitan (8 progeny, no SE/Asil - gelded and used as a child’s riding horse!), Nabilah Bint Saklabilah (11 SE/Asil progeny). The two remaining mares are Nabilah Nabilah-Shah by Shah Jahan (8 SE/Asil progeny) and Nabilah AK Bint Bashaar by AK El Bashaar (8 SE/Asil progeny).

Charmante Yasmina, Whitehouse Bint Yakouta and Whitehouse Yashma are progeny of Sahiby Yakouta of which Whitehouse Yashma was put to OMAR EL SHAKER to produce Whitehouse Yasimah. Her first foal is Brarab Yasmein by Mahib.

Three of Nabilah Ziyada's progeny was by OMAR EL SHAKER but not one of them had any progeny. A daughter of her, Nabilah Shazeda (by Shah Jahan) had a mare Nabilah El Azeda, by OMAR EL SHAKER. She produced 3 foals so far and one are SE/Asil - Salroma Ziyada by Shari-Silic Pasha (Hamasa El Fagr x Nabilah AK Bint Bashaar (dam of Shari-Silic Akbar).

Nabilah Bint Saklabilah produced two foals by OMAR EL SHAKER, Nabilah El Arabi (produced up to date just one pure Arab) and Nabilah Fantasia. Fantasia so far produced two SE/Asil foals for the Nabilah Stud by Mahib (imported) - Nabilah Nadara and Nabilah Faree.

Nabilah Nabilah-Shah is the dam of one OMAR EL SHAKER stallion - Shari-Silic Exotica, our stallion at Kromar Arabian Stud. He produced his first four foals out of Egyptian related mares. The lack of SE/Asil foals, would be remedied hopefully soon!o)

Two of Nabilah AK Bint Bashaar progeny are by OMAR EL SHAKER. - Shari-Silic Akbar (who produced 18 foals up to date and 6 of them are SE/Asil) and Shari-Silic Bakara (who have sired 5 known SE/Asil foals up to date). That of Shari-Silic Akbar are - MH Egyptian XTC (out of Sidi Egyptian Queen), Shari-Silic Nadia (who foaled the SE/Asil mare, Skarabee Leila by Arousa Amaal), Gulilah Saraqa (out of the imported mare Sraab), Gulilah Baht (out of the imported mare Badeia), Shari-Silic Bint Akbar (out of Shari-Silic Shawania - Shah Jahan x Lar Malika) and Shari-Silic Hafiz born in the year 2000 (out of Nabilah El Ameera - WD Bronson x Nabilah Bint Saklabilah). Two of Shari-Silic Bakara's progeny are out of Shams-El-Farin Sharalla (a Shaker El Masri descendent) - Waltstroom Nabila and the black mare Pashar Abla. The three other foals are Zad-El-Rakib El Masri (Farhida, also a Shaker El Masri descendent), Al-Yatun Tafar’ a (out of Joni Tahir – OMAR EL SHAKER x Farhida - thus a double OMAR EL SHAKER) and the black mare Zad-El-Rakib Lateefah (out of Rechar Fakhoorah - Malesh x Bint Golson).

The Mare Joni Tahir (OMAR EL SHAKER x Farhida a Shaker El Masri descendent) have thus far produced 4 SE/Asil colts: Al-Yatun Tabardar (by AK El Bashaar, gelded), Al-Yatun Tafara (by Sahiby Sheikh El Arab – Rafeek x AK Bint Gamilaa), Al-Yatun Tafar'a (by Shari-Silic Bakara) Al-Yatun Taamih (by Sahiby Sheikh El Arab).

Al-Yatun Fakaar (out of Shams-El-Farin Fariness, a Shaker El Masri descendent), born the year 2000, are the last foal (SE/Asil) by OMAR EL SHAKER.

He sired 10 SE/Asil foals and three of them have no progeny. About three years ago, after producing 77 foals of which were 36 mares and 41 colts, OMAR EL SHAKER moved to greener pastures. sad.gif

Wow, this is a complete report!
I have another question and I do hope you can answer it, too. Are you familiar with the stallion Darius (by Ghazal) who was born in Germany and came to South Africa? He wasn't straigt Egyptian but on the few photos I saw he looked very good. Did he sire some good progeny? Did he left a significant number of horses? Do you have a photo of him you can post?
I don't want to bother you with that many questions but I am very curious to hear something about this horse. He is a kind of "myths" in Germany. Nobody has ever seen him but many swear he looked extremely good.

Hi Dennis
I would be glad to answer all your questions, if I can biggrin.gif
Darius arrived in South Africa in 1979, at the age of ten. He was bred by a German breeder, the late Mr Heinz Hillenbrand. Mr Koos Voorendyk of the Vidiko stud imported him and there he remained till he died in 1991. Some of Mr. Koos Voorendyk's quotes are "Darious has revolutionised the Arabian horse breeding in South Africa" and "Darius took Vidiko from just another good stud and put it into a supper class"
In the 80's in the breeding classes, the name of one sire standed out above the others and that was Darius. Not only did his progeny class, but his progeny won and were placed in more of the in hand classes than any other stallion of that time. His oldest son in South Africa, Vidiko Gamil Grey (x Vidiko Nina) won riding classes, costume classes and won him his first acclaim as a sire, when he became South African National Colt. Vidiko Gamil Grey has since won many championships in halter. In 1990, Darius swep the boards when three of his offspring became national champions- Vidiko Mhalak (x Vidiko Maraka), National Champion Stallion, Vidiko Sayidi (x Vidiko Shaista), National Champion Mare and Sidi Ghazal ( x Lar Malika), National Junior Chamipion stallion. Vidiko Gamil Grey became National Reserve Senior Champion Stalion and Darius was the great-gransire of the National Junior Champion Mare Johrhemal El Nura (Hamasa El Fagr x johrhemar Munifa by Vidiko Mhalak); the National Champion Colt foal, Johrhemar el Dashan (Hamasa El fagr x Johrhemar Gaziya by Vidiko Gamil Grey); and the national Champion Filly Foal, Johrhemar El Abida (Hamasa El Fagr x Johrhemar Malika by Johrhemar Ashawan).
Darius have a total of 77 offspring of which were 36 mares and 41 stallions.
At the present day , about 64 (of which I know) of his progeny are participating in Indurance. They are by the following sons of Darius: Vidiko Hasani, Vidiko Ga'aL Grey ,Vidiko Fadl ,Sadat Ibn Gamil Grey (by Vidiko Gamil Grey), Sidi Ghazal (out of a SE mare Lar Malika), Vidiko Ta-Kuhd , Vidiko Nishan ,Vidiko Gindi Grey, Vidiko Fahrani, Vidiko Gamil Grey, Vidiko Mahlak, Vidiko Hashmir, Vidiko Shubbak, Vidiko Hadi, Vidiko Gohar Grey and Vidiko Hisan. There is one Darius son that participate in endurance and he is a double Darius (Darius x Vidiko Kamar by Darius). ohmy.gif

Hi all smile.gif

An observation that was made is that the older the progeny of Darius get, the more they loose pigmentation.
One negative point for me is that I heard that Darius was not approved in Germany to use as a sire( and not once, twice), in comparison with Sabdan (Hadban Enzahi x Haita) who was.
Do somebody have more info about this?
Sabdan was also imported into South Africa from Germany, and he past the test with flying colours.
He has 48 registered Arab progeny of which 50% are mares. We used one of his daughters, Tsoba Sabiya 2, in our stud.
Sabdan are sought in pedigrees for his riding ability, especially endurance.
Do anyone have pics of the following horses that appear in Omar El Shaker's pedigree?

Thank you so much for the photos. I didn't know the fact Darius wasn't licensed in Germany; I will try to find out more information about that.

Hi there

I worked at Arabian studs in South Africa when Darius progeny were at there peak - the stud I worked for had several Darius youngsters too - they were, Metra Dareesha (ex Sands Rasheeda) Metra Diana (ex Metra Fadina who was by Fadni) Metra Dakar - (colt out of Vidiko Kareema) and an orphan colt Metra Dareikos (out of Vidiko Nazini who died shortly after giving birth. There was also another colt out of Metra Kateefa but I can't remember his name - Kateefa was a daughter of Hamasa Farid who was imported along with Darius. As I now live in New Zealand I have no idea where these horses are now - if indeed they are still alive - I did meet Darius and he was one of those horses that when you look at, you look far back in time.......................

Darius was indeed twice or even 3 times rejected as a breeding stallion in Germany before being imported to South Africa. Who am I to say that there must have been a solid reason for that? South Africans were known to make major mistakes when it comes to breeding: The 5 imports in the 1940 ( the so called Nabilah imports INCLUDING El Moez ....!) were thought to be useless for the local Arab breed and were more used to improve the Boerperd and Basotho pony.

Another great fact: Omar El Shaker, ( the Asil / SE brother to El Shaklan !!!) was also not recognized for his good qualities. The breeders at the time had a fixation with what an Arabian horse had to look like I think! Omar El Shaker was left in the field for years....... together with a herd of Warmbloods to improve that breed.
Which is perfectly acceptable since most well performing European Warmbloods ( including Hannovarians, Holsteiners, Trahkeners etc) do have a certain percetange of (Shagya-) Arabian blood in their pedigrees which made them so versatile and swift and still strong and big.
Me and my wife use a Dutch Warmblood Stallion (Holsteiner too) to breed on our selected Anglo-Arab mares and the results are unbelievable!

Back to Omar El Shaker....
I had his last foal from my mare Shams-El-Farin Fariness.
I remember hoe we covered Fariness, who was young at the time. Omar El Shaker was running on his last bits of energy, he had cancer and was so skinny.
But his pride brought me to tears!!! He saw his "girl" and put all his strength together and came trotting straight to me, neck arched and ears forward: this was Morafics spirit coming alive! He was so beautiful, although he was dying.
A week later he was dead.

I always wanted to breed with Omar El Shaker but it wasn't meant to be.
His last foal died at 3 months; we found him dead in the paddock.
Shari-Silic Akbar, Omar El Shakers son by Nabilah AK Bint Bashaar, we used about a year ago to cover one of our mares. She didn't take and a month later Akbar died of colic.

We have Akbar's mother still, she is 25 years old.
After Omar El Shaker died we purchased Sahiby Sheikh El Arab who 's great grand sires ( all 4 of them) are Morafic ! He was carefully linebred by Valerie Noli -Marais and Mr Jack Maritz.

From "Sheikh" we have 5 daughters.

"Sheikh" stood 15.2 h and also had that Morafic look. He didn't have an extreme dish but he had that narrowing concave face, wide eyes, and he had a walk as if he owned the place...... and for me he did!

He passed away December 2006.
But in the past few years we lost many good stallions: Galieh, AK El Bashaar, Hamasa El Fagr, Arabest Kalid, Shams El Farin, Shari Silic Akbar, Shazzam and others.

Yip, all the good ones go first!
Same with people, it seems.

I did attach a picture from Sahiby Sheikh El Arab, don't know if it will show.
The only picture I have left after my PC crashed!!!
kay cochran
Omar El Shaker was very simular to Bakil. They could have passed for full brothers. Of course, it helped that Kaisoon was 7/8 in blood related to Morafic. He had that same big trot like Bakil . It is a shame that he was not used as much as he should have been. He was a beautiful stallion! JK

Hello everyone

I never had the opportunity to see Omar el Shaker in real life, however I did have the privilege to see his son, Shari Silic Akbar in real life. Akbar was magnificent and just like our own Exclusive and Darius he had the most beautiful sculptured head. We tried to breed some of our mares to Akbar a couple of times, but dew to human issues it unfortunately never happened. Sadly nor Akbar or his sire could leave the legacy that Darius left.

i was fortunate to see Darius in real life on more than one occasion and altough he was already an aged stallion at that time, he still was a magnificent and exquisite stallion! My very first broodmare, Vidiko Niha,23 is a Darius daughter and my first stallion, Vidiko Shah Bee,18 is a Darius son. How fortunate that they are still alive and well. Darius was, is and always will be the inspiration of our stud, Bin-Ysuf Arabians, his blood runs like a golden thread through our purebred Arabian horses. We were fortunate to have owned his most exuisite daughter, Metra Diana for the last year and a half of her live, her final gift, BY Mareeg Saahirah, by Sidi Exclusive is just as exquisite as old Diana. Saahirah is 3 crosses back to Darius.

Another of our homebred colts, BY Al Masudi also has 3 crosses to Darius, he is jointly owed by us and our dear friend Doris Hillenbrand of Germany. Doris father bred Darius, when Darius was born, she was just a young girl and he was born in her hands, she named him and according to her, Darius did indeed get a breeding licence and did indeed sire 2 foals before he left Germany for RSA.

Today, Darius remains the only stallion in RSA to have sired both the RSA National Supreme Champion stallion and mare in the same year, in that year the Reserve Supreme Champion Stallion was also a Darius son and the Res Supreme Champion mare was his grand daughter. To this day he still holds the record for the most wins in the Get of Sire class, but Darius did not just breed GO Arabians, they are functional and wellknown on endurance tracks, you can pick Darius related horses out from a far, they just stand out.

In my eyes Darius is thee stallion that took RSA Arabians from just another horse breed to thee most exotic and functional beauties. Darius inspired people, those that liked him used him and his offspring extensivly to enhance their own breeding program ( we still do, our entire heard carries Darius blood, only our pure Polish stallion, Kalahari does not), those that disliked him searched the world to find something that could beat his almost unbeatable children. In USA they count the crosses in their horses pedigrees to legends like Bask, here we count the crosses to Darius, he is a legend, icon and exceptional epitome of the Arabian breed.

Yes indeed the good ones goes, nothing is forever, but just how I wished Darius could have left more foals. Fortunately we have his son, Shah Bee, double grand son, Sidi Exclusive and tripple great grand son, BY Al-Masudi to continue his great legacy.

Omar el Shaker and his son, Akbar were not that fortunate, people overlooked them and did not appreciate them enough to preserve their legacy

Bye the way, Kaisoon had one son here in RSA, Hamasa Ibn Kaisoon, just like his sire, he was not used extensivly. We are fortunate to own the only 3 Kaisoon/ Darius mares, Sanrico Elvira and her daughters, Sanrico Tarifa and Bin-Yssuf Daantillaa in RSA. Through their breeders thought trough breeding decision, these 3 mares carries all 3 Nazeer sons that stood in Germany, Ghazal and Hadban Enzahi through Darius and Kaisoon through his son, hamasa Ibn Kaisoon, they also have Alaa el Din in their pedigree.

And very shortly another Darius grandson will join our stud to continue the great Darius legacy

kind regards

zandri

Thank you Zandri for your post and information on Darius.

I do not know why Darius did not get a breeding licence in Germany, but what does this matter? It does not make his impact on the South African arabian horse's history any less great and like they say - the prove is in the pudding wink.gif Noboddy can deny the legacy that he has left us with.

I think a lot of people may think of Darius as a sire of dainty and extremely refined horses that could not otherwise do much. However, as Zandri has pointed out, his offspring were actually extremely useful horses with solid conformation and doing very well at endurance and the likes. I think this may have been complimented by the fact that he was mostly bred to mares with a lot of substance, whilst he then added refinement and type.

Attached is my old Darius granddaughter - at 20 years young she just keeps getting better!
