We love Khemosabi and have three Khemosabi daughters in our broodmare band. We showed the youngest one TA Khedannaa (Khemosabi X Gdannaa by Gdansk) extensively in Western classes both in the UK and in the Sport horse championship in Deurne. Here is a photo of her performing in 2001 where she was the Western Champion-B.

Khemosabi : An Arabian Legend

By Liberty Dewert. On a warm May night in Salem, Oregon in 1967, people gathered in a one and a half-acre backyard and witnessed a miracle. No one knew it at the time, but they were witnessing the birth of one of the all-time greatest Arabians of the world. His name, Khemosabi; His life, extraordinary.

Khemosabi was actually a last change foal. Trainer Jeff Wonnell had brought several horses to a Salem horse show. Among them were Amerigo, a striking gray stallion, and Jurneeka, a 1964 champion at both English and western pleasure. Jurneeka had been bred to Amerigo the spring before and was assumed to be in foal. To the dismay of Wonnell, she began to show signs of being in season. After the classes were over Wonnell made one last effort for a 1967 Amerigo foal. He took the two horses to the only desolate place, the fairgrounds' racetrack, where the breeding took place. Eleven months later, a wonder of the Arabian world was born.

After Khemosabi's birth only one person put faith into him that he would be a champion. This was Jurneeka and Khemosabi's owner, Bert Husband. The only real distinguishing factor about Khemosabi was his personality. He was more inclined to be found nuzzling the humans than being coddled by his mother. For a name the Husbands turned to "The Lone Ranger". Selecting the name Indian Tonto used for his masked name, Khemosabi's name was determined. It is said to mean "faithful friend".

The first few shows were not what the Husbands' expected. Khemosabi's first show was in May 1968 in a conformation class. The Husbands' son Paul took the honors of showing the yearling and came away with a third place finish. That fall, he was shown in another show. This time his owner, Bert Husband, did the honors. Through the whole class Bert and Khemosabi took turns falling all over each other, but they still managed a win. After the show Sheila Varian, a breeder from Varian Arabians located in Arroyo Grande, California, approached the Husbands'. She had been so astounded by the colt that she asked permission to breed one of her mares to him as soon as he turned two. The Husbands' agreed and gradually the agreement came to include "a few more mares". Khemosabi then ventured out to the 1969 summer show circuit right alongside his mother. Once there, Ruth Husband insisted that trainer Mo Morris show Khemosabi in his class. In a field of 25 contenders somehow Khemosabi managed to take home the blue ribbon. Everyone agreed that it was not just the outer appearance, but his personality that made everyone fall in love with him. He posed for photographs and was friendly to everyone.

After the big win, Khemosabi's promotional campaign started up. He was advertised in trade magazines with a comic rendition of "The Lone Ranger" illustrated by Karen Haus Grandpre. In the comic strip, he battled evil forces with Ruth as his sidekick. The "William Tell Overture" was taken as Khemosabi's theme song. With a flip of a switch turning the song on Khemosabi went into action. He would prance around and flag his tail to the amusement of his many admirers.

Khemosabi's show results increased. In a 2 year span (1970-1972), he was a Canadian Top Ten stallion and the Champion Stallion in the 1972 Mid-Summer Classic held in Monroe, Washington. Not only was this show impressive because of his show presence, but his successful breeding also became evident. In the same show, one of his foals, then three years old, took reserve champion stallion.

After this show, Khemosabi's owners trusted him to be trained by Tom Bason who had shown him in the last two very successful years. At first there was no good communication, but then they clicked. Bason claims that Khemosabi was intelligent and easy to train.

Half way through 1972 Bert Husband became very ill. The Husband family had to lease out all of its horses, including Khemosabi. Bason and Khemosabi headed to West Virginia to a breeder and to the circuit in the East. Khemosabi had already shown his success as a driving horse and Tom chose to start him under saddle in English pleasure. He was not disappointed. Khemosabi still continued to excel in halter, but he obviously showed promise in more disciplines. At the 1972 Buckeye Show in Ohio, he took another championship and later that year placed second at the U.S. National Stallion Championship. In the next year, he won the U.S. National Stallion Championship against all odds. In 1976, he took first place at the U.S. National Championship in Western Pleasure and became the Canadian National Stallion Champion. His accomplishments led to his being immortalized by Breyer Animal Creations as a model horse in 1995.

Dear Maripa,

He is my favorite horse of all time. I saw him for the first time when he was 31 years old. He was in such great condition you wouldn't have known he was 31! Oh! his eyes.

I got to sit on him and my friends took pictures. I'll treasure them forever, and my memories of the visit are some of my most cherished! The video you saw--was it called "Dare to Dream?" You'd love that one. It's about 10 minutes long and was taken when Khemo was about 15 years old. It was produced for the syndicate who owned him to give to prospective mare owners. It's just awesome!

The similarity of this son with Khemo is fabulous. I thad to Khiowa and C Khresendo as one of the most similar children.

This is my opinion, because are the children that know more. Perhaps you they know other that they have great resemblance.

For a horse which was not extremely line or in-bred, Khemosabi was one of the most preponent purebred Arabians ever....

Last weekend, at Talaria we had a filly born. By a Khemo grandson named S Khoncherto, out of Botswana's first daughter, TF Kalahara. All Botswana "children" have very little in the way of white markings, as he tends to cut down white. Moreover, Botswana is extremely line bred. However, this filly is not only extremely beautiful but has (a gift I am sure from her great grandfather) four whites--(two socks in front, two stockings in back)!

Khemo genes are still kicking b....t!!

Yes, I would definitely say that Khemosabi throws himself in all his foals. Here is my yearling colt who is out of a Khemosabi grandson. biggrin.gif His dam line is double Fadjur too! I would keep him if it weren't for the fact that I don't need a colt, so this guy is now up for sale. sad.gif

Dear Maripa!

Oh, thank you for this thread! To stroll down the lane blessed by Khemosabi is a joy for my soul! What a wonderful sight, viewing all the beautiful photos of my favorite horse of all time.

I treasure every issue of Arabian Horse World and Arabian Horse Times that devoted so many features to this incomparable horse. I watch "Dare to Dream" often--I pray I don't wear it out. It fetches big bucks on e-Bay if you're lucky enough to have an extra one to offer. I also have the tape of him celebrating his 25th birthday at Scottsdale.

My visit to see this great horse was one of the highlights of my lifetime. I can still feel what I felt when Laura brought him out. The emotion was overwhelming. I bought a 5-lb bag of baby carrots and I couldn't feed them to him fast enough. I was laughing and crying all at once. His coat was so satiny and shiny you could almost see your reflection in it--this horse was 31 years old when I saw him!!!

He had the most beautiful eyes--perfectly formed eyes--large and dark. His eyes were like deep quiet pools. He was so wise, but he had an air of mischief about him too!

God truly blessed us all when he created Khemosabi!

He belongs to the ages. His spirit will never die!

Thanks again, Maripa, for reminiscing about Khemosabi!

Love to you,

Hello Shania03

I agree the Kaiyoum daughters are fantastic. we have a Kaiyoum, daughter that we imported from the USA some years ago, her name is Ophira and she is from an El Shaklan daughter named Luz De Fey ..........

Ophira has been a fabulous brood mare for us, producng some wonderful offspring, in fact she had one son by Om el Shareikh that was the living image of Khemo. I have uploaded a pic of her taken a couple of years ago.

Cheers

I have Khemosabi in most all of my breeding program as I have one granddaughter who is a great producer of herself along with what ever stallions I use her with...Our Padron Psyche colt is also Khemo on his dams line along with Bask....I also love Kaiyoum and would give my eye teeth to have one of his daughters...
This is our Khemistreetu (Khemosabi) daughter out of a Damascus Messiah daughter by Padron.

Donna
here are our other 2 fillies besides the one already pictured with mom above...You can see how they all look alike through the Khemo side..

The one pictured with mom is by Psky FA a Padron Psyche son out of an Ali Jamaal daughter who is now 1 yr old..

this filly was her first one with us and is by Eternety, now 3 yrs old....

her second filly is by Genesis C (Bey Shah) and is the sire of Style in Brazil, now 2 yrs old...
Jackie
I was just out spending time with my Khemo daughter, she is due to foal any day now. The sire of the foal is Jullyen El Jamaal. We are hoping for a filly so we can keep the foal. I love my Khemo girl such a sweet personality and such big brown eyes. Of course she looks just like her daddy. I got to see Khemo on his 30th birthday. I'll never forget it. One of the true greats of the breed.
Donna
Jackie, the Khemo and Ali Jamaal is great togeather, I am sure you will be very proud of that foal and would love to see pics of HER when SHE arrives..Thinking pink for you...
Donna
This is a double Khemosabi grandson and who won alot ( twice Scottsdale Champ top 5, Pacific Slopes Res Ch, Reg 1 Champ, twice AHANC show Champ, and Canadian Top ten plus) in the mid 90's and I think he is the most look-a-like of Khemo of all I have seen, but hugh as he is 16 hds tall with a neck and legs that just go forever...unfortunantly he is now a gelding and is being used as an endurence horse...

Khemofan
I also have the Dare to Dream video, it's fantastic, I actually purchased a video recorder that also played US format especially so I could watch this video!
