I was wondering what everyone's thoughts or experiences were on breeding the older mare via A.I.
Thanks.
JMO
Hello Ish, I bred a mare who was 16 yrs old using AI and had good results with her going in on the first attempt. I might add that she had foals before this by natural service. How old is you mare and what is her breeding history ?

Hi JMO,

Thank you for your input. My mare is 20 and has had foals prior, by hand and paddock services. She is a mare who cycles within a very short time span, which can often be hard to detect it's that quick and she is not obvious about it unfortunately. [I can't test her as I don't have my own stallion]
If I was to try A.I with her, it would be with fresh semen and she would be inseminated at the A.I service centre, after an initial scan to see where she is at.
I am new to this area of breeding and really wanted to hear the for's and against's before I commenced.

Ish so long as your mare is still in good shape reproductive wise there is no reason she will not go in foal using AI. The good thing about taking her to an AI centre is that they will be able to monitor her and see whats going on and inseminate her at the right time. You also have a wider window using fresh semen as apposed to frozen. So long as she is not one to stress from being away from home things should be ok. Good luck.

Thank you JMO. That lessens the trepidation I had. smile.gif
Yes, I agree - being able to have her situated at the A.I Centre will certainly cut out a lot of what if's and hopefully $$$ factor!
Thank you for the information regarding fresh semen opposed to frozen. I am not yet aware of the many factors to semen and A.I, so all relevant information is appreciated.
Thanks again biggrin.gif
