His German Foals have arrived!
By Niina Hartmann
When
a colt from a far-away country arrives in Germany, breeders always are
interested in such a young guy. When the colt bears the "Ansata"
prefix and comes in from Qatar you can be sure people are standig in
line to book their mares to him...

"She is the embodiment of my goals as a breeder!", Cornelia
Tauschke says
"Sheikh
bonus", some people call this phenomenon. "Even if the stallion
was three-legged most 'breeders' would have praised him", they
say. On the other hand you have to be fair enough to take into account
that the Sheikhs are breeding with superior horses. Chances are more
than realistic to get a quality foal by an up-coming colt for an affordable
fee. Later, when he will reign supreme as a head stallion of a farm
in Qatar he is out of reach for most people. Think of a stallion like
Al Aadeed Al Shaqab. Wouldn't it be nice if you could have bred your
mare to him when he was still young and not the expensive show star
of today?

Ansata Selman
(Ansata Hejazi x G Shafaria)
Bred by Ansata, proudly owned by Al
Rayyan Stud of Qatar
Cornelia
Tauschke, owner of El
Thayeba Stud in Germany, saw Ansata Selman (Ansata Hejazi x
G Shafaria, by Prince Fa Moniet) in 2001 as a two-year-old colt at Qatar
and felt that he was the perfect mate for her mares. "Though still
immature at that time, the first thing I noticed was his unbelievable
presence", she says. "His upright carriage and his well-set
neck impressed me very much", she adds. "Like many sons of
Ansata Hejazi he also had a bold way of moving."
After a closer inspection of the horse she reviewed Selman's pedigree.
"He looked like his pedigree says he should look", Cornelia
Tauschke says. "I liked the 'double Bukra' in him. The blood of
Ansata Bint Bukra runs deep in the pedigrees of my mares. Especially
in the daughters of El Thay Ibn Halim Shah and El Thay Mashour, thus
made Selman a natural choice for me!" Another interesting aspect
was the fact that Selman is a grandson of the late Prince Fa Moniet
who added a new dimension to the Ansata horses. He gave them more scope
and a free way of moving. "The Prince Fa Moniet blood was absolutely
new for my breeding program. I like his get very much. Horses like Ansata
Nefer Isis, Ansata Sinan and Selman's dam, G Shafaria are excellent
individuals", says Cornelia Tauschke.

(Ansata Selman x Kamla II by Ansata Halim Shah)
She
and Selman's owner, Sheikh Abdulaziz, worked out a leasing contract
for two years and in 2002 Ansata Selman set foot on European soil. Did
he adjust without problems to the new invironment? "Well, at the
beginning everything was new and exciting for him", Cornelia Tausche
says. In Qatar he stood in the stallion barn but at El Thayeba Stud
all breeding stallions are stabled in the big mare barn. "This
was absolutely thrilling for him and he needed some time to calm down",
she laughs. "The direct and close contact with other horses, especially
with mares, was a new experience for him and he liked it right from
the start!"

Self-assured
as he is, Selman tested how far he could go with his new caretaker.
"We had one serious discussion", Cornelia Tauschke says with
a smile. "Then I got the message through." He covered the
mares the good old way and was easy to control. "No problems with
live cover at all. He always behaved like a gentleman!"
Surprisingly enough Cornelia Tauschke discovered that Selman is an avid
jumper. He loved to fly over jumps. "But Bart van Buggenhout, manager
of Al Rayyan, didn't liked the idea that Selman would jump over his
paddock fence when back in Qatar and would disappear into the desert",
she laughs. "So I decided to quit that training!"

El Thay Maysa

"I
had hoped for elegant foals with well-shaped necks"
In
2002 Selman was entered at the German Stallion Show were he was awarded
a "Gold" premium. In 2003 his first four foals were born at
El Thayeba Stud - two colts and two fillies. What did Cornelia Tauschke
expected to get from Selman? "I had hoped for elegant foals with
long legs, upright carriage and long, well-shaped necks." Did she
get what she wanted? "Yes, I am more than satisfied with the foals
so far. All colts have especially well-set on, long and upright necks!"

From the first foal crop both fillies are already at new homes: El Thay
Rayyana (x El Thay Bint Kamla) is in Kuwait at Ajmal Stud (her dam was
sold in foal to Ansata Selman) and El Thay Maryam (x El Thay Mansoura)
was sold to Italy.

El Thay Melek
(Ansata Selman x El Thay Maheera by Nizam)
The two colts El Thay Melek and El Thay Mahfouz are still at the farm.
Stallion potential? "Definitely. I will keep both of them."
El Thay Melek's dam El Thay Maheera (Nizam x Mona II) is the "first
lady" of the stud. Her sons and daughters have a great impact on
the El Thayeba breeding program. Her most famous son to date is El Thay
Mansour (by Ansata Halim Shah) whose daughters are superb broodmares.
El Thay Melek was champion of his class (one of the largest classes
at the show) at the recent Egyptian Event Europe.

"I am dreaming of breeding him to his half sister El Thay Malikah
one day!"
El
Thay Mahfouz (x El Thay Mahfouza by El Thay Ibn Halim Shah) is nothing
but type and movement. He has inherited his sire's proud attitude. Attractive
head, upright neck and strong, short back are some of the attributes
that Mahfouz possesses. He will play a major role in the future breeding
program of El Thayeba. "I am dreaming about breeding him to his
half sister El Thay Malikah (Ansata Selman x El Thay Mashoura by El
Thay Mashour) one day", Cornelia Tauschke says. This charming filly
has already the title "International Reserve Champion Foal"
to her credit. "El Thay Malikah is the embodiment of my goals as
a breeder!"

Alltogether
four colts were born at El Thayeba; three of them will be retained.
The third one is the splendid El Thay Kamil who is one of the most beautiful
Selman foals to date. Refined and with extremely big eyes, El Thay Kamil
literally flies over the ground. Kamil is a very fancy colt with a sculptured,
dished face, long legs and high energy. He is out of one of Cornelia
Tauschke's favorite mares, the lovely "German National Champion
Filly" of 2002, El Thay Kamla (by El Thay Mashour).

Many
visitors from all over the world picked El Thay Kamil as their favorite.
"But he isn't for sale", Cornelia Tauschke says. "I need
him for the next step in my program!" Like the lovely filly El
Thay Malikah, this colt is out of a daughter by El Thay Mashour (Madkour
I x El Thay Bint Kamla by El Thay Mansour). It seems that the nick between
daughters of him and Ansata Selman worked extremely well.

The fourth colt that was born at El Thayeba is El Thay Manazeer out
of the old broodmatron El Thay Mansoura (dam of the famous chestnut
stallion El Thay Mameluk). "I hope that he will be sold to another
studfarm where they can use him properly", says Cornelia Tauschke.

More
than 30 mares were bred to Selman during his stay in Germany. The most
prominent lady who visited him was the international champion mare,
Navarrone "P" from Belgium. "Martine Desphegel reported
that Navarrone's filly is as splendid as her famous siblings",
Cornelia Tauschke says. "I am eager to see this filly in the show
ring somewhere in Europe soon."

"One
especially nice Selman filly is Al Illah Bint Galia (x Bint Galia by
El Thay Ibn Halim Shah), bred and owned by Sabine von Elm. She impressed
me very much!"
Another promising youngster is Insha Sha Latifa (x Naffada by Imperial
Imdal), bred by the passionate German breeder Thomas Bobrzyk and already
sold to Ariela Arabians of Israel. "Insha Sha Latifa is my new
love", Ariela's farm manager Chen Kedar relates. The typey filly
with the attractive bay colour was second in her class at the Egyptian
Event Europe.

At
the moment ten Selman foals are romping over the El Thayeba pastures.
"I will retain at least two or three of his fillies", Cornelia
Tauschke says. One of the most beautiful of them is El Thay Karubi (x
Kamla II by Ansata Halim Shah), who displays exquisite type coupled
with a reaching trot.

Now
Selman is back in Qatar and enjoys the luxurious life of a desert king
again. Was it worth the effort to bring him over to Germany? "Of
course", Cornelia Tauschke replies. "Without hesitation I
would do it again!"
